peter: The cover is blank.

jodi: Not sure what to expect here but our tispy purchasing of this record online one evening was the result of my little fantasy of Einar Örn from Sugarcubes and Fred Schneider from B-52s doing a record together.

Which would be amazing, right?

peter: Grindverk is apparently a Norse building method.

jodi: The cover has some small symbols on it but they are pale gray on pale gray. And there are no words. Or liner notes. It's 4 tracks:

Gesundheit Von K
The Twit & The Tower
Gesundheit Von K9
Kastrato

jodi: The first track, Gesundheit von K, has a sort of car chase cop action movie vibe to it. But, a car chase cop action movie shot in Paris in 1960 in which everyone is smoking hash all the time.

peter: Here's a page called Grindverk i Gloppen. At first I thought "gloppen" meant pigeon shit because of all the pigeon shit in a couple of the photos, but looking down the page I figured maybe not after all. At any rate, click the pics to get a large size. The last one is lovely.

jodi: Second track, The Twit & The Tower, also has a lot of the film soundtrack quality to it. But it's characterized by swooshy snare drum, xylophone, and a voice going "oh waaahhh, oh waaahhh, oh waaahhh, oh waaahhh". It is like a movie made by Italians about some jetsetters vacationing in the tropics. Again, in the 1960s.

jodi: Holy crap, that shit is all HAND HEWN.

jodi: And whoa, yeah, there really is a lot of pigeon shit.

peter: Side two already; EPs is short.

jodi: Now it is like a superhero movie. About superheroes who live and work in vast underground caverns where bands of youngsters play giant oil drums in elaborate gang-related trance rituals.

jodi: This is side aa, track 1, Gesundheit von K9. Which I was really hoping was going to have a dog in it but it doesn't sound like that's going to happen.

And quite reminiscent of a lot of the wooden structures in Skyrim. Here's the Whiterun stables, for example.

Interesting how Skyrim has wound up bracketing our day. Must be the weekend!

Dylan: I kind of feel like I have to post something here now that I got yelled at on facebook. *whistles innocently* I'm a little disappointed that my 45 minutes of sneezing theory is not the case.
2014.10.04 at 8.51pm · link ·
peter: So... moody, dancy, a bit grindy. No vocals, which means there's less Einar to make fun/enjoy of than I think we had hoped.

jodi: Okay, the final track, Kastrato, reminds me of something. My dad had a record that I was afraid of because it sounded like monsters, so he only played it after I had gone to bed. Which was WORSE, obviously, because I would lie huddled in my bed facing the wall too terrified to move or turn around because I just KNEW the monsters were right in my room, I mean I could hear them, keening over my shoulder like hungry buzzsaw bats. Eight foot high hungry buzzsaw bats. Anyway now that I am an adult I'm pretty sure that monsters music was the track "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving With a Pict" from Pink Floyd's "Ummagumma". ANYWAY this track has a kind of a jungle drums cave dance thing going on with this buzzsaw bat screech warbling through it.

No mention of a Claymore, though.

What is this "face book" of which you speak?

Nope, sorry. If you enjoy that kind of thing, I do have a record called "Austiculations of the Heart" that you may wish to listen to. It's heart sounds, described and sampled.

A strange land beyond even Morrowind.

jodi: Yes, I was hoping for some Einar vocals. When I was younger I used to think the Sugarcubes were all about the Bjork and that Einar was a kind of goofy irritant. But now that I'm older I've realized that Einar was the absolute best thing about that band. JUST LIKE FRED. Which is why they should totally make a record together!

FRED AND EINAR IF YOU ARE LISTENING PLEASE AT LEAST CONSIDER IT, OKAY?

jodi: Dylan stick around, we are listening to Swamp of Love next. You could even gaze longingly at the LP along with us as you do so, since I believe you have the record there but no turntable?

By the way everyone, Grindverk is over. We'll take a 5-10 minute break to refresh our wine glasses and then put up a new post for tonight's second selection.

Maybe you should try shouting at THEM on facebook.

Vicky: So searching for this band to try to even figure out what you are listening to returns some interesting results. Apparently they worked on a soundtrack for a movie where Skeet Ulrich got top billing. Strange that I'd never heard of it...
2014.10.04 at 10.00pm · link ·
jodi: Skeet Ulrich: file under People I Had Forgotten Ever Existed.

I usually try to find something online to link to in order to help people hear the music, whether it's Youtube (most often) or streaming tracks or some music blogger posting an album download. Nothing of the sort to be found for these guys, sadly.
